My English student history can be seen as a good example of self study and great effort.
My first contact with English was when I was kid. I and my brother were in a movie watching “Tom and Jerry” we were enjoying and of course the result was a lot of noise. Suddenly two foreign kids sitting in front of us turned and screamed “quiet please”. I could not understand but we shut up because of surprise, and after this day my interest in English arose in my mind. I remember by this day I was trying to guess the names of the objects in English, just by myself in secret.
But I was helped by my father indirectly, because he had a lot of English course material and I know where this material was stoked. I began to suffer with those intermediate books, I could not read a paragraph without a dictionary, the beginning was boring and the results were almost nothing. But with time and with good will, I began to learn and develop my fluency. After some years the Speak UP magazines was my way of getting pronunciation.
But I never had any kind of feedback and I could not see my real level of English. So I asked to a friend, whose was studding in ICBEU, if he knows some way to test my English. He told me that ICBEU do this kind of test free charge, no pay was required. I did not lose my time and went to ICBEU.
In ICBEU I did a write exam and an interview in English. The results were fantastic to me and I could see, for the first time, the results of my effort. Write exam I got the intermediate IV and in oral I got advanced II. The teacher whose did my test, asked to me where I’ve been learn English. When my answer was “by myself” see did not believe in me and she became furious and called me as a liar. She told me that she had capacity to recognize that I had contact with native English speakers, because was impossible to a self English student take the accent and intonation, like I did, without living abroad. So I really felt happy, and perceived I was in a good way.
So I did a public context to INFRAERO which English was one of the tests to be approved. This was my real test of English and I was approved in 25TH place and was admitted in INFRAERO as a navigation support work (flight control). 
I thought my English was really good and was time to study it more deeply. So I did the vestibular to UFMG to study English, and one more time my English did not fail and was admitted in Letras.
Letras was my first contact with the English classes and teachers of English was a place where my English really improved and my mistakes (results of self studies) was recognized and corrected (or just recognized). Some classes really help me, like “English through Drama” and “The correct pronunciation of English”. English through Drama” let the students fell like real actors and the final exam was a public presentation of a real play. In “Correct Pronunciation of English was a linguistic class, but the main aim of this class is just to recognize the marks of Portuguese accent in English and vise-versa. These two classes were really fantastic.
Analyzing by communication approach view, I think I did not follow completely the communicative idea but in other hand I was not completely traditional, this was a mid term idea. Results were excellent.
