- I
study in the foreign language department and all my English
study experience has been in Japan. Now I belong to ESS,
English Speaking Society. This club is divided into four
sections, Speech, Debate, Discussion and Drama. I belong to
the Speech section. So, I’m interested in Speech.
- I
disliked English in JHS because I couldn’t understand the
English taught by JHS teachers. So I didn’t study English
at all. However, I came to like English thanks to a cram
school teacher. He taught me English very kindly and very
hard. Then in HS, I studied English by reading textbooks or
study aids and so on. I didn’t have a special way to study
English in HS.
- I
could not make myself understood in English. I could not
make clear sentences, so I was often asked by my friends or
teachers, “Sorry, pardon?” or “What?” So, I am
trying to make clearer sentences in English.
- What
I was expecting before I came to the university was that
students only learned English, especially grammar, and
speaking English. However I have the classes about English
history or English culture and so on. So, I was a little bit
shocked by these classes. What I was surprised about in
university classes was that whether studying English or not,
being absent from classes or not are up to us. So we must be
responsible for our own learning.
- I
changed my ways of learning through native speaker’s
classes. They often said to us, “Don’t be afraid to make
mistakes” or they taught me how to pronounce English well
or how to communicate in English. In JHS, HS, I regarded
English as just reading, but now I enjoy speaking. I found
especially helpful the phrases, “Don’t be afraid to make
mistakes. Please make mistakes. These mistakes will help you
to study English.”
- I
still want to improve pronunciation because good
pronunciation is cool and I want to break the stereotype
that men cannot speak English fluently. Of course, there are
men who speak English fluently. But I think most men don’t
have good pronunciation. So I want to improve my English
pronunciation and say, “ I can speak English fluently”
- My
plan after graduation is that I will teach students English
at school or cram school. I want to teach many students what
I studied in JHS, HS, and university. Moreover, I think that
to teach English to someone is a good way to improve my
English skills. Then my goals are that I want students to be
interested in English and make native-speaker smile by using
my English.
- So,
be aggressive!!!! Don’t hesitate! Make eye contact!! If we
are not aggressive or hesitate for learning English, we will
not improve our English. That’s because we cannot get the
opportunities to change our mind or the way to learn
English. Besides, eye contact is very important. If we
don’ t do eye contact, our partners will be angry or feel
bad. So we cannot communicate with other people. And if we
do eye contact, we can understand what partners said by
looking at their eyes even if we cannot hear it well.
