indiane’s English narrative

 Once upon a time ...

hen I was 13 years old my mother asked me about the language that I would like to learn. At first, I thought about learning French  but then I realized how usefull English  is as a global language. Furhermore, English is a language that everybody is supposed to know. So, as soon as I could I started learning English at CENEX/FALE  , and I remember that it was very and exciting.  Learning English at that time was a kind of spare time to me, which I used to get in touch with new friends and to talk with them about life and whatsoever after the class. I remember that I made some good friends at that time. I loved going to the course because I was discovering a new world, a new code that helped me to understand the lyrics of the songs that I used to like.

Carry On

The Cranberries

I didn't understand the things you're going through
I never understood, I really never knew
Carry on
Carry on
The sun will always shine
Carry on
Carry on
We'll have a glass of wine
Or cigarette
Take destiny by the hand

And lead it far away
Take it to another land
We will all decay
Carry on
Carry on
The sun will always shine
Carry on
Carry on
We'll have a glass of wine
Or cigarette

t that time I discovered The Cranberries and I used to be mad about comprehending what Dolores O'Riordan was singning  and what was the meaning of her songs.

atching movies was another thing that used to get me very excited. I used to pay attention to the subtitles while I was wacthing a film and compare them to the character's voices.

arbitrary_orders.mp3   At school I used to do very well as I felt confident because of the private English course that I was taking. Above all I like English very much because I like studying languages in general. The Shining harshest.wav  I think that learning a new language implies learning a new culture, a new world that involves you. Especially with me, it makes me feel motivated and excited about dicovering new things.

usually say that knowing a new language is the same as knowing a new world because it is a new code being deciphered. With this new language it comes a whole package that includes the culture of the native speakers, their patterns of behaviour, their history, and whatsoever. After concluding the English course at CENEX, I had to stop studying English for a while and then, after concluding my college's degree, I started studying to the vestibular.

o, I really wished to get a pass at Letters and I remember that I studied very hard for that. Before I gained admission to UFMG I had a great opportunity to teach English to adolescents and adults, and I have to say that it was an amazing experience. Although it was very hard in some aspects, as I was teaching in a Public School at Ribeirão das Neves in the evenings and that was a bit dangerous, in others aspects it was a very rewarding experience because I could see that teaching is definitely not an easy task as many people think it is.

fter two years I had to stop teaching because of the university. The time was not compatible with the time of my classes at the university. Anyway, with my humble experience I could know a little bit about what teaching really is, and entering with this notion at the university was very good for me. Between teaching adolescents and adults, I think teaching adults was the best because they are quite open to the learning experience. They are the ones who are coming from work, they are already very tired but they are there trying to recuperate a time that was lost for them.

s soon as I have started my course I started a research projectwith professor Thaïs Flores. In this project I had an amazing chance to study the blurs between literary art and film adaptation.  My research was based in Brian McFarlane’s theory and I have worked with two literary works into film adaptation, which are The Killing and Barry Lyndon. Both adaptations are from Stanley Kubrick, whose films are mostly based on literary works.

hen, after this project, I started another project with Professor Vera Menezes in the linguistics area. In the Autonomy Project I could realize that learning any foreing language depends mostly on the learner’s motivation and his/her autonomy, which is what such learner does outside the classroom to comprehend and get involved with the language. I’ve interviewed many students and then I compared their narrative with theory. Read and listen to the following narratives that I have collected:

 http://www.veramenezes.com/audioi25.htm (English)

http://www.veramenezes.com/audioi29.htm (English)

Thus, I could see how practical this project was, and I must confess that I got quite motivated with it. So, when professor Vera called our project group to present our final work in Fortaleza I didn’t think twice  and it was very good and rewarding experience for me. Summing up, I can say that I could learn a lot and I usually say that researching is a matter of persistence and hard work.

egarding the use of English, I believe that this language surrounds me everywhere. At the university I talk with my colleagues about literature, poetry, novels, linguistics, and teaching in English. I also exchange some letters in English with a friend that nowadays lives in the U.S.A  .

y the way, ...  I love poems and I believe that , although it’s not its function, poetry is an art that turns life easier and lighter.

Dust of Snow

Robert Frost

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

nce I had a great chance to work at BID as a interpreter and I remember that I made a great use of my English at this international conference. I haven’t been abroad yet but I intend to go as soon as I can. Some of the disciplines I’ ve studied in English are Academic Writing, English Syntax, The Count in English, Fonology, Oral Skills, Poetry and 20th Century Literature, etc.

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

In all I must confess that English has been opening doors in my life. In my professional life I had already the chance to teach, as I’ve said before, and I’m a private English teacher today. I like my job very much, although I am aware that I have a lot to improve.  I just do not know why but coincidentally I have some students that are musicians ... and I must say that they are all very funny and so crazy!!! I have always wished to know how to play a musical instrument, especially the flute,  and imagine that I’m exchanging English lessons for flute lessons! That’s great! I’m very excited about it and so is my music teacher about learning English!!!  Well, I think it is time to say goodbye ...

I got so  excited with my narrative ... that I would never stop writing it ...  In all, I love studing and learning all the time. I’m always very busy and I rarely have time to go out as I would like to. I  think that studying and working are priorities in my life.  And I know that I’ve chosen the best way!!!

I’m almost graduating in English and Italian PICT4891.jpg  and I intend to continue studying after concluding my course. Maybe taking a master’s degree, who knows?!

So, that’s all for now ...

 I wish you all   glass.jpg   !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
